The HSMC partners with the Madison County Correctional Institution to provide a dog training/foster care program. Handlers are responsible for the day-to-day care, teaching basic commands, and house and crate training. Handlers complete an adoption packet which includes information on the dog’s personality, energy level, favorite toys, and what commands they know.
The adoption application can be completed online or in-person. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received. Once your information is verified and if approved, our staff will contact you to setup a “Meet and Greet” with the animal(s). The “Meet and Greet” process allows the potential adopter to meet the dogs on a one-to-one basis rather than in their kennel amongst other dogs who are barking and overly excited. This process has been implemented to reduce the stress level of our animals.
The meet and greet is considered a “mutual interview”. Please know that having a meet and greet is not a guarantee of adoption. All family members (or at least those individuals residing in the home), regardless of age, are required to meet a potential pet before the pet can be approved for adoption. We also require that any existing dogs in your home have a successful “meet and greet” with the dog that you are looking to adopt. Both you and our staff will participate in the meet and greet by taking a walk with the dogs around our property and then a closer meeting either in our meet and greet room or outside in our dog run.
A dog license must be purchased for all dog adoptions. The cost is $21 (CASH only).
In order to do our part to reduce the numbers of unwanted pets, all pets will be spayed or neutered prior to finalizing the adoption. We ask in advance for your patience if your pet has not yet been scheduled for surgery. All pending adoptions will be our first priority. All application approvals are at the discretion of the Humane Society of Madison County.
At this time, we are accepting adoption applications from OH residents only.
